In addition to her role at Islex, Shama serves as an independent board director at Liberty & Justice and Take2. She is also an advisor at XRC Ventures and a venture partner at NextGen Venture Partners. Shama’s notable contributions to industry and society were recognized when she was named an Edmund Hillary Fellow by the Hillary Institute. In 2023, she was named an Obama USA Leader, celebrating her role in driving systemic advancements in women’s health and environmental responsibility.

What do you appreciate about being a collaborator at Newcastle?

As a collaborator, I try to be helpful in whatever way is most useful—whether that's making introductions to companies or talent, brainstorming ideas for portfolio companies, or simply offering thoughts and feedback during meetings. I find the small-cap consumer PE space fascinating, and I appreciate that Newcastle engages collaborators beyond simple asks. Newcastle brings us into thoughtful, nuanced conversations around investment themes, market trends, and research. That kind of context makes it easier for us to support in a more targeted, meaningful way. I also love the community they’ve built—it's a smart, generous, and curious group, and it’s a pleasure to be part of it.

If you could instantly become an expert in anything, what would you choose and why?

Piano player. I've always loved the piano and regret never learning to play it as a child. I tried learning as an adult and failed miserably.

What was your childhood career dream and how different is it from what you’re doing now?

I got really into Formula One during my childhood and thought about becoming a race car driver. I haven't driven in over 10 years and anyone who knows my driving skill level wouldn't let me anywhere near their car.

What's the last thing that made you laugh out loud?

Recently, someone stole my 6-year-old daughter’s croissant while she was busy playing in the park. In its place, the thief left their hat. She wasn't amused but I was—only in NY!

Let’s talk
